GOP lawmakers blast Obama's pipeline rejection

Republican lawmakers blasted President Barack Obama's decision to reject a proposed Canada-to-Texas pipeline while environmental groups praised the move.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn says Obama's rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline "will do nothing but extend the jobs crisis and send thousands of U.S. jobs and valuable oil overseas."

Environmental groups in Texas praised the move saying the tar sands that would have arrived in Texas for refining would have further polluted the Houston area's already dirty air.

The Texas chapter of the group Public Citizen says the Obama administration had to reject the pipeline after Congress imposed a 60-day deadline, not enough time to conduct an informed review. The group also says the pipeline would have crossed over Texas' key aquifers and the risk of spills was too great.

House Speaker John Boehner says President Barack Obama is breaking his promise to create jobs by rejecting a plan to build an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas.

Boehner says Republicans will keep fighting for the Keystone XL pipeline because the project is good for the U.S. economy because it would create thousands of jobs.

Canada disappointed over pipeline rejection

Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper says he told Barack Obama he was profoundly disappointed after the U.S. president called to tell him the administration rejected a plan to build an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas.

Andrew MacDougall, a spokesman for Harper, said Wednesday that Obama explained the decision was not on the merits of the Keystone XL pipeline, but rather on the "arbitrary nature" of the Feb. 21 deadline set by a Republicans as part of tax measure he signed.

Obama said the decision was without prejudice, meaning that TransCanada is free to reapply.

MacDougall says Harper told Obama that he hoped the pipeline would ultimately be approved given the jobs it would create both in Canada and the U.S.
