Hey Guys,

Well, Like I mentioned in the past Green Iguana just won't book a chick fronted band. What a drag, I have seen the crowds there recently and I know we could entertain them a lot better than the bands I've seen there... Bummer !! I tried !!!!

I remember that you don't book female singers @ Green Iguana. My old bass player Mike Mastriano forwarded your email to me several months ago. I think it's sexist, but what can you do?

We have 3 female acts currently in rotation, but it's true they generally don't ask for the female acts back.

Thanks,
-Jimmy

The St. Petersburg Live Music Bar Scene Examiner Column has attempted to contact Green Iguana representation for an official statement regarding these allegations, however, Green Iguana representation has yet to reply back or provide an official statement confirming or denying these allegations.

One person who was able to get at least an email reply back from Green Iguana representation regarding the allegations was Michele Reeks. Michele Reeks is the girlfriend of a local musician and band member who was also upset by the allegations.

The following is the series of emails between Michele Reeks and Green Iguana COO, Alan Fosco.

I am shocked to learn that the Green Iguanas in the Tampa Bay area, do
not hire bands with female lead singers, guitar players, etc.

I have heard this from your booking agent Jimmy James. Is this true?
Because honestly, if it is, you are looking at a discrimination law
suit!

Some of the top rated bands in the Tampa Bay area, have females in them.

I would be interested in hearing this directly from Mr. Richard Alan
Calderoni...before I take this information to the media.

Please respond as soon as possible.

Sincere regards,

Michele L. Reeks

Michele, I’m not sure why Jimmy would say something like that as it is
far from the truth and does not represent any type of policy within
our company. We welcome female artists just as we do male artists as
long as they play the music that fits our needs and have the energy
that is needed to keep our crowd. We utilize outside agents like Jimmy
along with others to do talent scouting as well as scheduling and the
only time we really get involved with booking a local act is if a band
has operational issues, does not play well at a location, or we hear a
band that we feel would be a good fit and request a placement date. We
do have bands currently on rotation that have female vocalists like
Luna Blue, North 2 South, and Wild Ginger along with the Spells, and
Alias Julius who have played with us for quite a while without a
problem.

I have sent this email along with my feelings about this issue to
Jimmy just to make sure he knows where we stand on the matter, and I
am sorry for the misunderstanding.

Regards,

Alan Fosco

You may really want to look into getting another booking agent that
will adhere to the policies of the Green Iguana.

There are several other bands in the Tampa Bay area with female
vocalists/musicians that are very popular. These would be LoudMouth,
Midnight Rush, the Jenna Stone Band, Twisted Logic, and Black Rose,
just to name a few. All of these bands have been denied by Jimmy James
to perform at the Green Iguanas. It is very obvious that Jimmy has
other agendas...including the promotion of his girlfriend's band at
your establishments, and keeping out all of the other female band
competitors. To be honest with you, if any of the bands that you
listed were any good, I would have heard of them, as I have been
actively involved in the Tampa Bay music scene since 1989.

Again, thank you for your response, I will forward your email on to
the bands that I have mentioned, as well as the local written media
who are awaiting a response to this inquiry. From what it
appears...Jimmy James may be your problem. I am a manager of a band,
and from what I understand, there is absolutely NO WAY that a band can
play at your establishments unless they go through Jimmy James. I find
it hard to believe that he is the "end all, be all" to perform at the
Green Iguanas. Truthfully...that may be one "policy" that you will
need to change immediately.

Sincere regards,

Michele L. Reeks

Email #4
from: Michele Reeks
to: Alan Fosco, Green Iguana COO.
dated: Saturday, July 2nd, 2011 at 6:55 PM.

Mr. Fosco...

You may be interested in knowing that Alias Julius is now calling me
and harassing me due to you forwarding my email. I understand that you
forwarded it to Jimmy James, but my telephone number was on it, and
now he has given that to his girlfriend!

For the record...Alias Julius is the ONLY female you have booked and
she is booked 12 times, at all 5 Green Iguanas during the month of
July. This is a sign of Nepotism by your booking agent! Any more
harassing telephone calls that I get, I will make sure that the Green
Iguanas and Jimmy James are sued for female discrimination!

In all honesty, Jimmy James has now become a liability to your
Corporation. I am completely prepared to bring in, not only local
written media, but television media as well.

I have been in this area for 40 years and I have been nothing but
professional in bringing this matter to your attention. However, being
harassed on my private cell phone number by Alias Julius due to
"damage control" by her boyfriend, Jimmy James, is going a bit too
far. I will be forwarding all of the emails received from bands, sent
by Jimmy James, to you in a separate email. Just to make sure that you
understand that Jimmy James is accusing the Green Iguana owners and
management of not hiring female bands.

Sincere regards,

Michele L. Reeks

Email #5
from: Alan Fosco, Green Iguana COO.
to: Michele Reeks
dated: Sunday, July 3rd, 2011 at 9:19 AM.

Honestly Michele, we are in the business of serving burgers and beer
not drama. As I have looked into this further it looks like more of a
personal personal vendetta then anything else. Things that I have
found listed on blogs and facebook that you and/or your associates
have posted are disconcerting and unprofessional. I personally know
for a face that we do not allow discrimination in any type of way a I
really believe that with over a 20 years of unblemished background any
type of credible news media outlet will see through these accusation.
You should also know that any type of untrue or unwarranted
accusations towards or company that we believe can be proven liable
will be sent to our legal department so they can be dealt with
accordingly.

Email #6
from: Michele Reeks
to: Alan Fosco, Green Iguana COO.

Well...this is NOT a personal vendetta, but a fact that Jimmy James is
denying female bands to play at your establishments. I do not know
Jimmy James, but I do know of his practices and favortisms. His words
and emails do not lie. This has been going on since 2008 and it needs
to stop.

As far as the "untrue or unwarranted accusations"...they are true and
your online schedule proves it. However, something tells me that you
really have no idea or control over what or how your bands are
booked...nor do you seem to care.

This is a severe problem that is not looked as being good for your
establishments. I guess turning a "blind eye" will keep you from any
legal problems that will incur. However, you have been made aware of
the problem, you refuse to do anything about and unfortunately, the
Green Iguana will face the bad publicity.

As far as the posts on Facebook...it's called freedom of speech and
was stated BEFORE you decided to answer my email...and before we did
some investigating on our own...and found out the truth about your
ONLY female act and her relationship with your booking agent. Plus,
Jimmy James's emails put the blame on the Green Iguana...not him.
Therefore, he is making you liable.

I believe you may want to do some more "investigating" of this
situation before you blantantly dismiss it. Too many people know the
truth. Too many people know of the injustice that is happening and too
many people want a change!

By the way...it can not be a personal vendetta when I don't know Jimmy
James or his girlfriend. All I wanted to do is bring to light, a very
serious situation that is happening at your establishments. Obviously
I did strike a nerve somewhere, since it seems like the Green Iguanas
and Jimmy James are now on "damage control". The damage has already
been done and it started three years ago when Jimmy James decided to
write those emails.

You are welcomed to talk to other local female bands who will all tell
you the same thing...Jimmy James has told them that the Green Iguanas
will not hire female bands. In this case, the majority is not wrong.

Sincere regards,

Michele L. Reeks

The Tampa Bay music scene is full of female fronted bands...probably more so now then ever before in it’s long history. Some of the musical acts (both cover & original) in the Tampa Bay area that have female lead or co-lead vocalists are:

LoudMouth, Blackjack Bomber, Midnight Rush, Black Rose, Twisted Logic, Faux Doubt, Jenna Stone Band, Mojo Dragonfly, The Red Sunday, Luna Blue, Surfing Raccoons, Patty Sanphy Group, Bitter Sweet, Mighty Mongo, Anchor Atlantic, Phoenix, Decepcion (recently disbanded), Alias Julius, Constance, Amber Lynn Nicol, Someday Souvenir, Blue Cypress, Jennifer Lee and Nevaeh Peek, Here B4, Amanda Drake and The Barnburners, Bad Magistrate, Triage, North 2 South, Kickin’ Again (recently disbanded), Super Hits, Lori Cherry & the Jokers, Lois Greco... and many, many, many more!

With all these bands in the Tampa Bay area that have female singers, one could find it suspicious that the Green Iguana rarely has a female fronted band performing at any of their locations.

One of the few female acts listed above that does play regularly at the Green Iguana venues is local artist, Alias Julius, and it is rumored that Alias Julius is in a romantic relationship with Green Iguana booking agent, Jimmy James. If this is true, then one could conceivably come to conclusions that their relationship is the reason for her being the one female artist that is booked at the Green Iguana locations so often on a regular basis.

The Jenna Stone Band did also perform at the Green Iguana Stadium back on April 30th at the Black Pearl Rock Radio Launch Party, however, The Jenna Stone Band was not booked directly by Jimmy James or the Green Iguana.... The band was booked to play there by the president of Black Pearl Rock Radio himself, specifically for the radio station’s launch party. It was also rumored that the Black Pearl Rock Radio president had to “jump through hoops” in order to get the Green Iguana to agree to allow The Jenna Stone Band to perform at the event in the first place.
