COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Two women from the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals showered nude on a street corner in Columbia today to highlight how they believe consuming water and adopting a vegan lifestyle helps the environment.
The naked women showered behind a banner that read, "Clean Your Conscience: Go Vegan! 1 lb. of Meat Equals 6 Months of Showers" at lunchtime in the heart of Five Points on Thursday.
PETA says it wants consumers to know that the best way to conserve water and to help the environment is to go vegan.
According to the group, going vegan is an "easy way to cut down on personal water usage, and it's the best thing that anyone can do to help stop animal suffering."
Citing a group called Environmental Defense, PETA argues that if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegan foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off U.S. roads.
"It's impossible to 'go green' without going vegan," says PETA member Virginia Fort. "Just by changing their diets, concerned people can help protect the Earth, their own health, and countless animals."
The demonstration took place at noon on the southwest corner of Greene St. and Harden St.
